What Happens to Your Car in a Rear-End Collision

Rear-end collisions are the most common type of crash on U.S. roads. According to NHTSA's 2022 crash data, they account for approximately 28 percent of all reported collisions annually. Most happen at low to moderate speeds, most involve no injuries, and most look manageable from the outside. That last part is where drivers consistently get the assessment wrong.
The visible damage after a rear-end impact, a scuffed bumper cover, a cracked tail light, a slight crease in the trunk lid, tells you where the force arrived. It does not tell you where the force went.
The Bumper System: More Than a Cover
Most drivers see a cracked bumper cover and assume they know the extent of the damage. Modern vehicles are built with multiple layers designed to absorb crash energy, and most of that damage is hidden behind parts you cannot see from the outside.
What most people call the bumper is the bumper cover, the painted plastic piece that wraps the rear of the vehicle. Behind it is a system with two more components: a foam or plastic energy absorber and a steel or aluminum reinforcement bar bolted to the vehicle frame or unibody structure.
The absorber is designed to compress on impact, dissipating energy before it reaches the reinforcement bar. The reinforcement bar distributes remaining force across the structure rather than concentrating it at a single point. Both are sacrificial by design. A collision hard enough to work them properly will leave both damaged even if the cover looks largely intact.
A small crack or scuff in the bumper cover often looks cosmetic. In many cases, the damage extends far beyond the painted surface. The absorber behind it is compressed and no longer functional. The reinforcement bar is bent. Neither is visible without removing the cover, and neither will perform as intended in a subsequent impact.
What Happens at Different Speeds
Impact speed determines how far into the vehicle structure the force travels. Every collision differs by vehicle weight, angle, and point of impact, but a general framework holds:
Under 10 mph: Typically limited to the bumper cover and absorber. Reinforcement bar may be unaffected. Often a candidate for bumper cover replacement or repair without structural work.
10 to 25 mph: Damage often reaches components behind the bumper cover, including reinforcement structures, trunk alignment, and sensors. What looks like a simple bumper repair frequently is not.
Above 25 mph: Structural damage becomes probable and requires a thorough inspection beyond the bumper assembly. Wiring harness and sensor damage is common at this range.
These are general thresholds. A heavier striking vehicle transfers more energy than its speed alone suggests. A collision where one vehicle was stationary and the other was moving delivers more force than a collision where both were moving in the same direction. Frame and Unibody Damage
Most vehicles built in the last 30 years use unibody construction, meaning the body and the frame are a single integrated structure rather than a body mounted on a separate frame. In a unibody vehicle, rear-end collision force travels through the rear rails and into the floor pan, the rocker panels, and potentially the B and C pillars depending on the severity.
Frame damage is often invisible without specialized measuring equipment. A vehicle can appear completely drivable while still being out of manufacturer specification, which affects handling, accelerates tire wear, and compromises crash performance if the vehicle is involved in a subsequent collision.

Frame and Unibody Straightening is performed before any body or paint work begins, because surface repairs on a vehicle with unaddressed structural damage are repairs built on a compromised foundation.
Sensor and Electronics Damage
Backup cameras, parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert systems, blind-spot monitors, and rear-facing radar units for adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking are all positioned at or near the impact zone in a rear-end collision. Most drivers do not think of these as collision damage, but they are.
Sensor damage does not always produce an immediate warning light. A backup camera may still display an image while its housing is cracked and water ingress has begun. A radar unit may still function within a limited range while its alignment is off enough to produce false positives or miss real obstacles. Parking sensors can be physically intact but miscalibrated from the force of impact.
Sensor calibration is a required step on any vehicle equipped with advanced driver assistance systems. Replacing a damaged bumper assembly and reinstalling sensors without recalibrating them to manufacturer specifications leaves those systems in an unknown state. Whiplash and the Vehicle Connection
The same collision mechanics that send force through the bumper system and into the vehicle structure also send force through the occupants. A rear-end impact that appears minor on the vehicle can produce significant soft tissue injury, particularly when the struck vehicle was stationary at the moment of impact.
If you or any occupant experiences neck pain, headaches, or shoulder stiffness after a rear-end collision, medical evaluation should happen before vehicle repair becomes the primary focus. The vehicle damage can wait. Symptoms that appear 24 to 72 hours after the collision are consistent with whiplash and should be documented and treated.
What to Do After a Rear-End Collision
What you do in the first few minutes affects what you can recover later.
Document at the scene: Photograph all vehicles from multiple angles, the road conditions, any skid marks, and the position of the vehicles before they are moved. Get the other driver’s insurance information, license plate, and driver’s license number.
File a police report: In New York, VTL Section 605 requires drivers to file a written accident report with the DMV within 10 days when a collision involves injury or property damage exceeding $1,000. A police report is a separate matter and is worth requesting at the scene whenever damage is visible. Given that bumper system repairs routinely exceed $1,000, the DMV filing is almost always required.
Do not assume the damage is cosmetic: A professional assessment is the only reliable way to determine what the impact actually affected. Visual inspection from outside the vehicle is not sufficient.
Choose your shop: Under New York Insurance Law Section 2610, you have the right to select your own repair facility. Your insurer cannot require you to use a specific shop.
